TUTORIAL: Aplicación de Antelina para figuras 3D / Application of suede for 3D figures

Hola scrapers!!

Hello scrapers !! I'm María José from Scrap Planeta and I come with new news: with this tutorial I say goodbye to the "written tutorials", because from September you will have ALL my tutorials on YouTube and you will be able to see all the steps and techniques on video. So on this special occasion I wanted to share this cute project of a 3D hot air balloon for babies with a matching mini album.

The materials that I have used are the following:

  • 👉 Antelina colores Azul cielo y Gris visón / Suede Sky Blue and Mink Gray colors
  • 👉 Ecopiel Madera Arce / Maple Wood Faux Leather
  • 👉 Colección de papeles Sweetie Baby y tarjetas de la colección / Collection of Sweetie Baby papers and collection cards
  • 👉 Chipoards "Móvil estrellas" y "Set mi Bebé" / Chipoards "Mobile Stars" and "Set my Baby"
  • 👉 Vinilo termotransfer para ecopiel y antelina Glitter Plata  / Thermal transfer vinyl for faux leather and suede Glitter Silver
  • 👉 Cartulinas perladas Gris Visón / Pearl cardboard Mink gray
I will already detail you in the explanation

You know that I like all kinds of crafts, so I try to combine scrap with other techniques. On this occasion, we are going to make this balloon with the cartepesta technique and taking advantage of the qualities of the Kora suede, which, unlike others on the market, is elastic. This quality makes it an ideal material for making 3D projects, such as things for babies.

To start we need a balloon, a cardboard or plastic coffee cup, napkins or newspaper and glue diluted in water, I used the ratio 3 glue x 1 water. It is also helpful to have a container to support, such as a small planter or glass jar.

We will start by fixing the glass to the balloon with masking tape or similar (which we will have inflated to the size we want to have). The letterhead technique is very simple and allows for impressive work. It is only a matter of layering napkins (or newspaper) with glue: we paint glue, stick pieces of napkins (better cut irregularly with our hands than with scissors), we put glue again, we wait half an hour for it to dry, layer glue, napkin, glue, we wait half an hour, and so on until we have 2 or 3 layers. After 24 hours we repeat the process and let it dry. When drying, it can take several days, it should be a hard object or at least quite consistent. Let it air dry in a cool, dry place.

The next step is to take the measurements of the suede that we are going to need. With a folio we will make the pattern that we like the most and we will pass it to the suede piece to cut the pieces. I used two colors of suede. We will also cut about 2 cm from the glass to give it the proper shape.

Next, with some pieces of wadding and textile glue, we cover the balloon. It does not matter that they are small pieces, just covering the entire surface and not mounting one on top of the other is enough.

We sew or glue all the suede pieces, one after the other, except the last one in which we will leave the lower half without joining until we have the balloon inside. As the suede is elastic, inserting the balloon is very simple. Once this is done, we finish sewing or gluing the last section of suede.

We fold the suede edges inward and puncture the balloon with a needle or pin.

If the letterhead has been very hard, we can leave it as is, but I preferred to fill the interior with wadding to reinforce it and so that when handling it, it would not collapse or sink.

Once we have the balloon lined, we decorate it to our liking, although we will not finish the decoration until we have to attach the basket or box to the balloon.

To close the balloon underneath, I measured the diameter of the circle, and used a piece of custom cardboard lined with suede. With an awl I passed through satin cord and hung some silicone stars that I had at home.

The next step will be to make the balloon basket and attach it to it with wooden skewers. The skewers, decorated with ribbon, are attached to the basket and once this is done, dropping the balloon between them will give us the position where the rods should be attached to the balloon.

For the box we need: 4 pieces of cardboard of 6.5x10 cm, 1 piece of cardboard of 9.8x10 cm, 2 pieces of eco-leather of 8x50 cm approximately, 1 piece of eco-leather of 11x11 cm to cover the base and 9.8x9 , 6 cm for the other face of the base.

We assemble the box and cover it with the eco-leather inside and out. We glue the rods or wooden skewers in each corner.

To decorate the box I used 4 pieces of 8x5 cm cardboard and I used some wooden stars to emboss in the center of each piece.

As I said before, to attach the balloon to the basket we drop it between the rods and apply textile adhesive or hot silicone. We cover the junction points with tape or some decoration.

To finish decorating the basket I used this chipboard to carve with a thermotransfer vinyl cutter the star shapes that I applied in the center of the embossing.

The application of Kora vinyl on eco-leather or suede is very simple: we cut the design (with a cutter, scissors, dies or cutting plotter), we apply heat with the iron, we lift the plastic that protects the vinyl and that's it, it's that easy.

To finish the balloon, we only need to make the suede bags that hang from the basket. To do this we will cut 2 circles of suede 12 cm in diameter, and in turn we will cut these circles in half. With this we will form the bags that we will fill with wadding and tie with a 2 mm strip of eco-leather or any cord that we like.

And we have finished the balloon !!! We can fill the basket with any baby gift or as I did, with a very cute mini album for her first pictures.

To make the mini we will need 2 pieces of cardboard of 8.5x8.5 cm for the lids and 1 piece of 5x8.5 cm for the spine. We assemble the covers lining with baby blue binding fabric. The interior structure is very resistant and easy to do, which allows a 180 degree opening.

We will cut 5 pages of pearl mink cardboard, the ideal color for this project, 16.8x8 cm. We fold 8 cm on each side so we will have a 0.8 cm spine on each page. on the other hand we cut 5 cards of 8x8 cm and fold to 1 cm, leaving a page of 8x7 cm.

We assemble the structure by pasting each single page to the double page using the tab. When we have the 5 blocks we stick one against the other on one of the pages until we have the 5 pieces joined. For the part of the tenderloins we will glue it to the back of our mini and we add a tab on each side to fix the structure to the lids.

Now we only have to decorate our mini as we like, with paper, chipboards, cutouts ...

¡Espero que os haya gustado este proyecto! Nos vemos pronto. Besosssss

I hope you liked this project! See you soon. Kissesssss
